Privacy Policy
Last Updated: March 7, 2026
Welcome to Cover-Letter-AI. This Privacy Policy explains how our Chrome extension collects, uses, and protects your information.
1. Information We Collect
To provide our core functionality—generating professional and contextual cover letters based on job postings—we request specific permissions and collect the following types of information:
- Personal Identity Information (OAuth): When you log in via Google, we collect your email address and basic profile information (such as your name) to authenticate your account and personalize your experience. We request the
identity permission for this purpose.
- Web Page Content (Active Tab): When you activate the extension on a supported job posting webpage, we read the content of your current tab to analyze the job requirements. This data is only accessed when you explicitly invoke the extension. We request the
activeTab permission for this purpose.
- Local Storage Data: We utilize Chrome's storage mechanisms to save your personal preferences, resume data, and sometimes past generated cover letters to ensure a seamless experience across browsing sessions. We request the
storage permission for this purpose.
2. How We Use Your Information
The data we collect is strictly used to operate, maintain, and improve the extension. Specifically, we use your data to:
- Securely authenticate your account and maintain session persistence across sessions.
- Analyze the text of job descriptions directly from the web page you are viewing to generate a specific, highly-tailored cover letter using Artificial Intelligence models.
- Save your user preferences and input files locally to prevent redundant text entry and provide a smooth, fast user experience.
3. Data Sharing and Disclosure
Your privacy is extremely important to us. We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information, resume data, or generated letters to any independent third parties for marketing purposes. Your data may only be shared in the following limited circumstances:
- Third-Party AI Service Providers: To generate the cover letter, we may securely transmit the job description data and the resume context you provide to third-party AI service providers (such as Google’s Gemini or OpenAI APIs). This data is strictly used for fulfilling the prompt.
- Legal Requirements: We may disclose information if required by law, subpoena, or to comply with a binding legal process.
4. Data Security
We implement robust, industry-standard security measures to protect your data. Profile preferences, resume inputs, and session tokens are strictly stored on your own device using Chrome's secure local storage API. Any data transmitted to external servers or AI APIs is fully encrypted in transit using secure HTTPS protocols.
5. Your Rights and Choices
You maintain comprehensive control over your personal data at all times:
- Revoke Account Access: You can disconnect your Google account and revoke all OAuth permissions at any time via your Google Account security settings page ("Third-party apps with account access").
- Clear App Data: You can clear all stored profile and preference data by using the extension's clear data functionalities or by clearing the extension data within your Chrome browser settings.
- Withdraw Consent: Uninstalling the extension completely removes it from your browser and halts any current or future data collection.
6. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may periodically update this Privacy Policy to accurately reflect modifications to our practices, new features, or updated legal requirements. We will notify users of any substantial material changes through updates within the extension interface or by changing the "Last Updated" date at the top of this document.
7. Contact Information
If you have any questions, concerns, or specific requests regarding this Privacy Policy, your rights, or our data handling practices, please contact the developer via the official support channels listed on the Chrome Web Store.
